Michael Jackson's death today may have been unnecessary, and might have been prevented by a device called an AED. Such a device, if present in his home, probably would have offered the only realistic chance of saving his life once sudden cardiac arrest [SCA] occurred, says Professor John Banzhaf of George Washington University.
"A $1300 device, proven effective and increasingly found in homes, might have saved Jackson's life," argues Banzhaf.
Unlike a heart attack, SCA is almost always fatal unless a defibrillator is used to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm. Indeed, about 95% of people who experience SCA die before reaching the hospital. C.P.R., which reportedly was administered by the ambulance crew which responded to Jackson, can in some cases keep the blood flowing, but defibrillation at the hospital usually occurs only after death or irreparable brain damage has already occurred.
Even under the most favorable conditions, there is usually no substitute for having a defibrillator in the home, which is where 80% of SCA attacks occur.
As the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association noted, "even though Mr. Jackson's collapse was apparently witnessed, emergency medical services responded promptly and Mr. Jackson's home was near UCLA Medical Center, it was still not sufficient to revive Mr. Jackson because SCA victims usually need immediate CPR and the shock of an automated external defibrillator (AED) if they are to have any chance of survival."
Recognizing that defibrillation as soon as possible after a SCA episode presents the best -- and often the only realistic -- chance of saving a life, many manufacturers have developed automatic external defibrillators [AED] designed for use by non-medical personnel, and these are being placed in an ever growing number of public places such as schools, casinos, gymnasiums, etc. where they are available for instant use before medically trained personnel can respond, and where they reportedly save thousands of lives each year.
AEDs are also increasingly being found in private homes, especially if a resident is at increased risk. They can be purchased for less than $1300, and are well worth the cost, especially with major figures like Jackson in whom millions of dollars were probably invested towards his planned comeback. Why Jackson did not have such an AED, and why those who were backing him and depended upon his remaining alive did not provide one, is an inexplicable oversight.
Risk factors for SCA include stress, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, excess weight, drug or alcohol abuse, a high fat diet and/or a sedentary lifestyle, Diabetes, advanced age, congenital heart disorders, and other very common factors.
